Product Engineer

Douglas Dynamics is North America’s premier manufacturer and upfitter of commercial vehicle attachments and equipment. This position is responsible for technical transfer between US and China. Assist US engineering/operations team in project development and launch and serving as the liaison for business technology transfer. Develop expertise through extensive overseas training to be a primary support resource of DD products for dealer/end user in China.

Job Responsibilities

• Acquire products knowledge/specification at US facilities and be familiar with product manual. Translate and be ready to provide technical support and/or documents to end users and distributors in China
• Understand the trend (design, regulation, etc.) for the truck industry in China. Build/maintain database of specifications of primary vehicles that customers use with DD products
• Answer questions, provide guidance to distributors and end-users on technical and troubleshooting issue
• Be the primary technical liaison between distributor/end user and DD US
• Direct investigation of customer complaints regarding quality, tolerances, specifications, and delivered condition of products. Record, analyze, and inform DD US operation team of status and disposition of customer complaints and claims. 
• Identify and coordinate settlement of claims, for which company is responsible, within limits prescribed by management. 
• Implement division customized warranty program as required with Chinese local customer.
• Work with DD US customer technical support department to provide technical trainings to DD Chinese distributors and establish training and certifying program for better customer support
• Develop product operation and usage training program effectively fit for local end users
• Proactively collect customer technical requirement and feedback for DD product continuous improvement to fit for local customers
• Collaborate with DD US product engineering team to develop effective technology for the local market
• Develop and drive modification-for-China projects together with Business Development and distributor/end user
• Assist cross functional team members in engineering, quality assurance, sourcing and product management.

Requirements 

• Communication Skills: Strong English communication skills required. Ability to translate effectively technical and specification information and requirements. Communicate effectively on: complex issues, specifications with suppliers, technical issues with customers and other employees. Must be a team player. Requires regular interaction with engineering, operations, quality and sourcing.
• Technical Skills: Metal fabrication, welding, hands-on mechanical aptitude. Ability to safely and effectively operate common hand, power, and machine tools. Familiarity with manufacturing processes and materials. Diagnostics of electrical and hydraulics systems. Solid background in reading and interpreting product prints, including geometric tolerance.
• Computer Skills: Working knowledge of Solidworks or AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint. Experience using data acquisition equipment desirable.
• Mathematical Skills: Apply concepts of probability, statistical inference, trigonometry, and complex concepts of algebra and geometry. Understanding of advanced math, calculus, advanced graphing and charting, logarithmic.
• Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems and understand technical problems involving known variables in non-standard situations. Ability to clearly communicate unique specifications or product standards that differ between the US and China.
• Physical Demands: Must be able to use phone and computer for an extended period of time. Ability to lift 10-40 pounds with good body mechanics. Must be able to move around safely in a manufacturing environment. Travel required 25-40% of the time, often with limited advance notification. Will required extended travel time to US for product training and in China for product installation and training.

Work Environment

• Vision: close and distance focus, depth perception, adjust focus, color discrimination, peripheral vision. Occasional overtime, travel by plane or car to overnight locations.
